The $5,000 rule says to multiply your system's age by the repair cost. If the result is over $5,000, replacing is usually worth considering; under $5,000, repairing usually makes more sense. For example, a 12-year-old unit with a $300 repair scores 3,600, so repair it.
How long does an AC last in Austin, Texas?
