What to Do Right Now
A few quick checks can sometimes get you running again, and a couple of them keep a small problem from turning into a big one. Work through these while you wait for your callback.
- Check the thermostat. Make sure it's set to "cool" or "heat," the setpoint is below (or above) room temperature, and the screen isn't blank. If it runs on batteries, replace them.
- Check the breakers. Look for a tripped breaker for the indoor unit and the outdoor unit. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.
- Check the air filter. A clogged filter can choke airflow and make the system freeze up or shut down. Swap it if it's dirty.
- Check the outdoor disconnect. The switch or pull-out block in the box near the outdoor unit should be on or firmly in place.
- Look for water at the indoor unit. Many systems have a safety switch that shuts the AC off when the drain pan fills. Standing water there usually means a clogged drain line.
- Turn the system off if you see ice or smell burning. Ice on the copper lines or coil means switch cooling off and run the fan only to thaw it. A burning or electrical smell means turn the system off at the thermostat and the breaker.
Smell gas or hear a CO alarm?
Get everyone, including pets, out of the home right away. Once you're outside, call 911, and call your gas company's emergency line if you smell gas. Don't flip switches or use the thermostat on your way out. Don't go back in until emergency responders say it's safe.
